Images from farrowing stalls

A study published on 2 August 2026 used overhead Kinect V2 depth cameras to record sows for five consecutive days around farrowing. The researchers classified standing, kneeling, sitting, sternal lying, left-side lying and right-side lying. Their training set contained 26,506 images from 18 sows; a separate test set held 17,901 images from 12 sows.

Results in a second stall layout

The highest-scoring model, YOLO11m-cls, reached an F1 score of 0.98 on the original test images. It scored 0.94 on 4,697 images from three sows in diagonal stalls used for external validation. The paper reports posture classification; it does not report a measured reduction in piglet deaths.
